Because children aren't always adept at expressing their feelings, it can sometimes be difficult for parents to determine which characteristics are "just a phase" and which could signify deeper emotional issues. However, if your child appears overly fearful about new or unfamiliar situations or reacts to stress in a physical manner (by bed-wetting, withholding stool, or even self-injuring), it is possible he or she is dealing with an anxiety disorder that could affect his or her future emotional development.
